Twerk

Twerk

beginners

Twerking originated in New Orleans in the early 1990s as a party dance and is similar to Mapouka dance. Mapouka is a dance originating from African culture. For example, in the Ivory Coast region, Mapouka is known as a celebratory dance, also used as a tool to lure or select a mate. This dance is believed to bring people closer to God.

In today's music videos, we can see the universal technique of Twerk, which has evolved since the 1990s. Twerk emphasizes the movement of the buttocks, but the technique of Twerk is variable. In Twerk classes, this technique moves the whole body, fulfilling the dance and strengthening potential of the movement. Twerk does not discriminate between gender, age, or body proportions.

Recommended dance wear & equipment: shorts of any styles and colours, tighter are more favoured so the moves are well distinguished however also leggings with multicoloured patterns are popular. Shirts, short with belly revealed or longer, comfortable sneakers, possibly long socks. Very important equipment component are knee covers. Part of the dance class takes place on the ground, most often on the knees!
